What I liked about Harris was that he commanded attention and exuded power the way I expected Dumbledore to. Given the opportunity, I think he would have performed that side of Dumbledore quite well. He teaches Edmond Dantes the blade, and it was the perfect representation of the unassuming elderly that was remarkably lithe and spry. The one thing I want to point out that illustrated his potential for playing the "badass" side of Dumbledore is his role in The Count of Monte Cristo. I think a lot has already been said in other posts regarding Harris. Grand scheme, maybe someone like Ian McKellen could have done both, but thats just not the world we live in. In the end, both men did a fine job and couldnt really fill the other mans shoes. As wonderful as Richard Harris was, he was too old to be able to do that work. The Dumbledore/Voldemort duel in the Ministry is such an amazing scene. Michael Gambon played this part quite well. Thats the moment when Harry realizes why people say Dumbledore is such a powerful wizard. The change comes after Voldemort returns, when he kicks down Moodys door. That being said, Later Dumbledore is a much more forceful and spry man. Michael Gambon is a little too forceful, which is where we get things like in GoF. There is a calmness and a slower pace that Richard Harris played perfectly. Early Dumbledore is the kind, wise old man with a twinkle in his eye. I think that both men played their respective versions correctly and neither could have filled the others role. P.S: Sorry if it's too long the post, it's the first one I do on Reddit so I havent got the hang of it yet :) (Obviously there were some weird moments: HARRYDIDYAPUTYOURNAMEINTHEGOBLETOFFIAH), but I place that responsability upon the writers. In the books, Dumbledore was always described as being energetic and jovial, and that's exactly what Gambon is! Harris could have never performed the Voldemort fight nearly as well as Gambon imo, amongst many other important scenes like the one in the cave. Though in some ways, Richard Harris' calmness and tranquility makes him a good Dumbledore, I actually think Michael Gambon's energy is what makes him even better. One thing they always seem to say and agree with is that Michael Gambon's Dumbledore is bad and far worse than Richard Harris'. So, I've been a Harry Potter fan since the first books came out, and since then I have obviously had some encounters with people who had read the books and watched the films.
